Rock Edge

Rock Edge was built for Marian A. Sargent, a widow and the great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. Completed in 1911, this Georgian Revival-style estate overlooks Beverly Harbor. After Sargent's death in 1924, the house passed to her niece Eleonora Sears. Born in 1881, Sears was a great beauty among Boston's elite. She is best remembered as a superb athlete known for breaking barriers in women's sports and a strong, eccentric personality. Sears was an accomplished equestrienne, a pioneering squash player, and a nationally ranked tennis player. She won the national doubles championship four times, twice with the legendary Hazel Wightman. Sears was also known for walking long distances, both in California and from Providence to Boston, which she did more than once. One of the earliest women to own an automobile (and to be arrested for speeding), she was also the first Boston woman to pilot an airplane alone.
