Death of Mrs. Gregory

Widow of Col. James F. Gregory of Sheridan's Staff.

Mrs. James F. Gregory, one of Washington's former society leaders, died at her home here this morning at half-past 6. She was the wife of the late Col. James F. Gregory, a member of General Sheridan's staff, and the inventor of the cipher code of the Signal Corps which is now used in the army. Her father, Rev. Dr. Charles Minnigerode, was, during the civil war characterized as the “rebel preacher.” he having been the rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Richmond and the pastor to Jefferson Davis and Gen. Robert E. Lee of the confederacy.

Mrs. Gregory's remains will be buried alongside those of her husband at Arlington. The arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed.
