Memoirs of a Busy Life: By James Ryder Randall

Being Stray/Vagrant Reminiscences Of The Author Of “Maryland, My Maryland.”

The Chronical of an Eventful Life

In the summer of 1907, these six articles appeared in the Baltimore Sun on successive Sundays, written by James R. Randall. Some confusion is introduced by the fact that two of them, July 28 and August 4, claim to be the fourth in the series. The concluding paper, on Aug. 11, is preceeded by a roman numeral V, so one could get the incorrect impression that it was the fifth in the series.

In the second fourth entry on August 4, Randall distances himself from his story of writing “My Maryland” in an odd way. Rather than telling the story, he quotes Brander Mathews telling the story and quoting earlier letters from Randall. Thus the first person account by Randall appears in single quotes within doublequotes in Randall's own article.
