“John W. Dawson (1820-1877) came to Fort Wayne in 1838. He knew Johnny Appleseed personally and was 25 years of age when Johnny Appleseed died. Mr. Dawson was 51 years of age when this article was written October 20, 1871;

Abraham Lincoln appointed him territorial governor of Utah in 1860. At the end of his services as governor of Utah, Mr. Dawson returned to Fort Wayne to take up law and newspaper work. He wrote many articles on the early history of Fort Wayne during the time he was owner and editor of the Fort Wayne Times.” -- Johnny Appleseed Memorial Commission, 1936
