Sequoya

Architect of the Capitol.

The Sequoya statue in National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol was given by the state of Oklahoma in 1917. Vinnie Ream Hoxie was commisisoned to do this sculpture in 1912. She died in 1914 and the sculpture was finished by G. Julian Zolnay. The book in Sequoya's left hand represents the Cherokee Syllabary he invented.

Sequoya, here, is spelled in Cherokee: ᏏᏉᏱ (Siquoyi) – Ꮟ (Si), Ꮙ (Quo), Ᏹ (Yi). Sequoya usually signed his name: ᏍᏏᏉᏯ (Ssiquoya) – Ꮝ (S), Ꮟ (Si), Ꮙ (Quo), Ꮿ (Ya). But, perhaps, the more common spelling is: ᏎᏉᏯ (Sequoya) – Ꮞ (Se), Ꮙ (Quo), Ꮿ (Ya).
