Thomas Fleming, Cartoonist, Dies

Succumbs at 78 After Illness of a Year--For 15 Years Conducted Art Syndicate.

MAPLEWOOD, N. J., March 5. — Thomas Fleming, cartoonist, died yesterday at his home, 304 Elmwood Avenue, Maplewood. He had been ill for a year. He was 78 years old on Feb. 25.

He was born in Philadelphia, and as a youth attended art schools in that city and New York. Virtually his whole life was devoted to art. At various times he was a cartoonist for The New York World, New York Sun and The Commercial Advertiser. He signed his cartoons “Tom.”

For the last fifteen years Mr. Fleming conducted an art syndicate in Newark. He also wrote four books, the last one being “Notable Newarkers.” Mr. Fleming had lived in Maplewood and South Orange since 1881. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society, the Art Centre and the Society of Cartoonists of New York.

He left his wife, two sons, Edwin B. Fleming of Plainfield and Homer Fleming of Maplewood, and three grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 8 P. M. at 660 Stuyvesant Avenue, Irvington. Burial will be in Bridgeport, Conn.
