Sad Accident. — Last night while the Columbia Engine Company were on their way down Capitol Hill to the fire, Mr. Benjamin Greenup fell, and the Suction machine ran over him. He was taken up and carefully attended, but died of his injuries before his comrades could carry him to the Engine House.
When the company returned and found that he was dead, there was scarcely a dry eye among them all. Mr. Greenup was very popular, and his death occasioned a great shock and deep regret.
From the post mortem examination it appears that his fall occasioned his death. The injuries on his head were not sufficient to have killed him, nor did the wheels of the suction appear to have inflicted any mortal injury, for the wheel that struck him appeared to have passed along his body lengthwise, not even breaking the skin. At the time of his fall it was supposed that no material injury had taken place, and therefore the great shock to his friends on learning of his death.
Mr. Greenup was a single man, a stonecutter by trade, and a fine bass singer. His social qualities caused him to be universally beloved. His loss is lamented by a large circle of friends.
