Here, Upham has cribbed E. Rogers' drawing from an 1861 piece, published by Upham, called Jeff Davis Going to War/Jeff Davis Returning from War. This is possible because the original drawing doesn't resemble Jefferson Davis at all and since the subject is already a donkey the direction of the transformation can be reversed.
